Safety supervisor a must

ALOR STAR: All construction sites nationwide must employ a site safety supervisor at the workplace beginning Jan 1 next year.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health director-general Datuk Dr Johari Basri said the ruling was meant to reduce accidents at construction sites.

A maximum fine of RM1,000 will be imposed on employers who failed to adhere to the ruling under Rule 25 (1) of the Factories and Machinery (Building Operations and Work Engineering of Construction — Safety) Regulations 1986.

“The role of a site safety supervisor is to reduce accidents at construction sites, which have become critical following an increase in the number of projects nationwide.

“The supervisor plays a crucial role in advising employers of safety issues at the workplace.

“They will help to inspect and rectify dangerous practices as well as ensuring the provisions on statutory requirements with respect to safety and health matters are complied with,” he said after attending a dialogue and breaking of fast programme with 40 contractors here on Wednesday.

Dr Johari said contractors should hire those with a minimum of two years’ experience in the construction field as site safety supervisors.

“Construction sites have become the workplace with the highest number of fatalities.

“Sixty-six fatalities, including five in Kedah, were recorded last year,” he said, adding that there were 9,136 registered construction sites in the country.
